Currants

Currants are small, dark dried grapes made from the Black Corinth variety, known for their intense flavour, deep colour, and naturally tangy sweetness.

Much smaller than raisins or sultanas, currants have a chewy texture and are packed with a rich, concentrated taste that makes them ideal for recipes needing a bold fruit note. Unlike sultanas and raisins, currants are never treated before drying and are typically air- or sun-dried, resulting in a more natural and slightly tart finish.

Greece is the world’s most recognised producer of currants, particularly from the Peloponnese region, where they’ve been cultivated for centuries and are often referred to as Zante currants. Their intense flavour makes them a favourite in traditional baking — such as hot cross buns, fruit loaves, scones, and Christmas puddings — as well as savoury applications like couscous, pilafs, or stuffing.
