Addressing Deforestation and Environmental Impact at Helios Ingredients.

At Helios Ingredients, we are committed to environmental sustainability and minimising the ecological footprint of the crops we source and distribute. This document provides an overview of the relationship between deforestation and four key crops: coconuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and vine fruits.

Coconut

Deforestation Link: Moderate
Coconut farming generally requires tropical climates, and plantations are sometimes established in regions where tropical forests have been cleared. However, compared to other crops (e.g., palm oil, rubber, cocoa), coconuts are less directly associated with large-scale deforestation.
Environmental Concerns: Beyond deforestation, unsustainable farming practices can lead to soil degradation and loss of biodiversity.

Helios Ingredients is affiliated with Sustainable Coconut Partnership, which has created a framework within which the entire coconut industry can work in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. The framework addresses critical issues such as:

Combating Deforestation: Encouraging coconut farming practices that protect tropical forests and preserve biodiversity.
Promoting Sustainable Farming: Supporting practices that improve soil health, reduce water consumption, and increase resilience to climate change.
Empowering Local Communities: Advocating for fair trade, ethical labour practices, and economic benefits for smallholder farmers

standards of environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Almonds

Deforestation Link: Low to Moderate
Almond cultivation is concentrated in areas such as California, Spain, and Australia. These regions typically utilise pre-converted agricultural land, making deforestation less of a concern. However, the high water demand for almond farming presents significant environmental challenges.
Environmental Concerns: Water stress and the overuse of resources can negatively impact local ecosystems and communities.

Helios’ key almond suppliers in California, Spain and Australia work with growers to optimise water usage by implementing advanced irrigation systems reducing water consumption. These growers also actively promote local biodiversity through integrated pest management and have invested in innovative technologies to support and preserve local bee populations.

Hazelnuts

Vine Fruits

Deforestation Link: Low to Moderate
Vine fruits are cultivated on pre-existing agricultural lands in most regions, with minimal direct deforestation impact. However, expanding cultivation in certain areas can occasionally encroach upon natural habitats.
Environmental Concerns: Issues such as soil erosion and habitat disruption may arise, particularly in regions where vine cultivation is newly established.
